Undergraduate Program

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Mississippi offers programs leading to the B.S. (Bachelor of Science) degree in chemistry, the B.S. degree in forensic chemistry, the B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) degree in biochemistry, and the B.A. degree in chemistry. The American Chemical Society certifies the B.S. degree in chemistry. The B.S. degree in forensic chemistry is one of five undergraduate chemistry degree programs in the U.S. that is accredited by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC). The B.A. degree in biochemistry closely follows the curriculum recommended by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Honors sections and recitations allow students who are members of the McDonnell-Barksdale Honors College to meet some of their Honors requirements with chemistry courses. Many Honors College students conduct research with Chemistry and Biochemistry Department faculty to fulfill their research project requirements and research is required of all B.S. graduates. Click here for more information on undergraduate research.  Outreach opportunities through the University of Mississippi chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society can also be used to fulfill the public service requirement for the Honors College.

The University of Mississippi Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society provides a forum for the exchange of ideas among students in the chemical sciences, and encourage and assist students who are considering careers in the chemical sciences. All students enrolled in, or considering enrollment in, degree programs offered by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, the Department of Chemical Engineering, or the School of Pharmacy are eligible and encouraged to join.

The B.S. Chemistry degree is certified by the American Chemical Society.

Admission to a Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry baccalaureate degree program is granted after a student gains admission to the University, as described in detail in the Undergraduate Catalog. As soon as a student declares a major in chemistry, biochemistry, or forensic chemistry, an academic adviser in the department is appointed.

Entering students need adequate preparation in chemistry, mathematics, and English.  An ACT Mathematics subsection score of 24 or SAT (Revised) Score of 580 will be required before students can declare the major and attempt the chemistry courses that are required for their degree program.

Admission with advanced standing is possible for students who successfully complete the high school Advanced Placement Program with a minimum rank of 3, and for students who achieve a satisfactory score on the chemistry test that is administered through the College Level Examination Program.

An applicant seeking to transfer credit to the Department from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning may be admitted with advanced standing provided that all University admission requirements have been met. Transfer credit for academic work in chemistry may be applied toward degree requirements only for courses that are equivalent to those offered by this Department, and only for courses in which the student has earned a grade of at least C.

Courses of instruction can be found here and a minor in chemistry is also available.
