About this Program

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry in the College of Liberal Arts offers the B.A. in Biochemistry. To be admitted into this degree program, students must meet certain prerequisites.

Students who major in biochemistry investigate the detailed chemistry of the life process. Our biochemistry majors learn about the composition, properties, and reactions of biological substances, and gain enhanced reasoning and problem-solving skills thanks to a curriculum that follows the recommendations of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB).

B.A. vs B.S.

There are two paths to study biochemistry: the Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry or the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with an emphasis in Biochemistry.

  • The Bachelor of Arts option has a wider and deeper general education foundation. It gives students the flexibility to combine the study of biochemistry with other fields of study appropriate for career preparation or professional school as it requires a minor field of study (or double major).

  • The Bachelor of Science option provides a more rigorous math and science curriculum with opportunities for significant research experience. Students build a strong background in the concepts as well as computational and laboratory techniques used in biochemistry.

The Value of a Biochemistry Degree

Biochemistry students learn to operate sophisticated instruments, interpret data, work cooperatively with diverse groups of people, and communicate complex concepts in clear language–all skills that are highly desirable to employers.

Related careers in biochemistry include:
